Artist Statement
I find my work rooting in my own experiences as young woman and my struggle to balance my own sense of femininity with common pressures and expectations of my behavior. In my new work, themes of dichotomy such as those between growth and decay, death and rebirth, beauty and the grotesque have become the way to express these ideas. My current work uses these dualities and the space in between these concepts to question the very nature of them. These pieces focus on creating "living" textures with both man made building materials and natural materials that, together, represent the dichotomy between nature and the contrived. The textures and natural objects chosen in these pieces have a strong symbolic meaning in relation to the figures or abstract figurative forms . Together they work to create a single poetic statement.
My artwork often contains elements that connect the viewer by self-recognition, primarily though relation to the figure and other basic human objects, such as masks. and natural objects. I use the figure often because I want my audience to have a strong sense of self reflection with my artwork.. My process often changes during the production of a piece to accommodate fresh ideas; by communicating with the process of my work the concepts themselves evolve. The process of making becomes vital to the finished product.
